Man, 85, barred from Butlin’s weekday solo visit

Malcolm, an 85-year-old grandfather from East Sussex, was left stunned and disappointed when Butlin’s resort rejected his request for a mid-week solo stay at their Skegness site. The devoted husband, whose wife battles cancer, and loyal customer was told solo travelers are only welcome on weekends.

For years, Malcolm and his loved ones have cherished Butlin’s as their go-to destination. However, this time, he sought a brief solo escape to recharge. The £75 mid-week price tag seemed reasonable, but Butlin’s strict policy forbade solo travelers during family breaks, unless accompanied by children.

Butlin’s offered Malcolm a weekend stay, but at a staggering £300 – four times the original price. The alternative was unacceptable, especially since his son couldn’t join him due to work commitments.

Malcolm appealed to Butlin’s to waive their rules for older solo travelers, citing his loyalty and unique circumstances. Unfortunately, his request was denied.

Undeterred, Malcolm booked an alternative solo trip, but his experience raises important questions about inclusivity and flexibility in the travel industry.

The company maintained that their family breaks are exclusively mid-week, leaving solo travelers like Malcolm with limited options.

Malcolm shared his dismay on BBC Radio Sussex: “I’ve been to Butlin’s before… I enjoy the entertainment and accommodations. I was amazed when they refused me.”

This heartfelt story highlights the challenges solo travelers face and the need for travel companies to reconsider their policies, especially for loyal customers like Malcolm.
