Nigerian-American Afrobeats sensation Davido popularly known as David Adedeji Adeleke recently faced intense backlash from fans after proudly announcing his participation in the ongoing US presidential election. On October 5, 2024, Election Day in the United States, Davido took to social media platform X to share a photo of himself holding an “I voted” sticker, excitedly declaring that he had exercised his civil right for the first time.

However, his post was met with widespread criticism from Nigerians, who accused him of being hypocritical. Many pointed out that Davido was not as vocal about the Nigerian presidential elections in 2023, sparking outrage among his fans. Scores of X users flooded his comment section, calling him out for reportedly not voting in Nigeria.

One fan commented, “This guy is a hypocrite; you’ve never voted in any presidential election in Nigeria, but now you’re seeking validation from Americans.” Another user expressed frustration, saying, “You can vote for a US presidential candidate but can’t be bothered to vote for Nigerian presidential candidates… You’re useless for this so-called celebrity status.”

Social media personality Daniel Regha also criticized Davido, stating, “Where was this energy during the Nigerian general election? You didn’t show proof of voting, didn’t support voters, or use your platform to address electoral malpractices. But you’re proud to vote in the US election? This isn’t the achievement you think it is.

Other users questioned Davido’s claim of voting for the first time, asking, “In your entire life? Not even in Nigeria?” The backlash highlights the perceived double standard in Davido’s actions, sparking a broader conversation about celebrity responsibility and civic engagement.
