The Incident and Court Proceedings

The ban was issued by Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after Stormzy pleaded guilty to the offence via a letter. An off-duty police officer had spotted the rapper using his phone while driving his Rolls-Royce in West Kensington, London.

District Judge Andrew Sweet, who presided over the case, criticised Stormzy’s behaviour as “dangerous and irresponsible.” In addition to the driving ban, the artist was fined £2,010 ($2,498), and six penalty points were added to his licence. Prior to this incident, Stormzy already had six penalty points for a previous speeding offence.

Under UK law, drivers face disqualification if they accumulate 12 or more penalty points within a three-year period.
