Lisabi : A Legend Is Born – Review.

“Baisi bawa” is the song that echoed in my mind long after the movie ended. Its powerful rhythm perfectly captures the unity of the Egba people. As the first part of Lisabi wrapped up, viewers were left in awe by its plot twists, eagerly anticipating the second part.

Released on January 10 and now streaming on Netflix, Lisabi: A Legend is Born is directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, who co-wrote the film with Yinka Olaoye. This historical drama transports us to the 18th century, recounting the Egba people’s fight for freedom from oppression.

The film begins with an emotional and intense flashback to Lisabi’s early life. His mother, in a brave act of sacrifice, fights off soldiers to protect her son, giving her life so he can survive. Raised by magical beings in the forest, this poignant opening sets the stage for a story of resilience, unity, love and betrayal.

As the narrative unfolds, themes of oppression, unity, and love are deeply explored. The Egba people’s plight under the harsh rule of the Ilari Oyo fosters a powerful sense of togetherness. Their struggles, from farming to defending their land, highlight their determination to overcome adversity. The theme of love is particularly touching, seen in Ikeola’s brave decision to seek the help of witches to protect her people, symbolizing the strength of love and sacrifice for one’s community.

The cast’s dedicated performances bring these themes to life, enhancing the authenticity of the story. The actors successfully embody Lisabi Agbongbo Akala’s legacy and highlight the resilience of the Egba people under his leadership. Viewers are immersed in this poignant chapter of Nigerian history, guided by the bravery and devotion of these characters.

Is the story real? Yes, it is. Lisabi: A Legend is Born is not just fiction but a historically grounded narrative. Meticulously researched, the film preserves and shares the Egba people’s legacy, celebrating their proverbs, battles, and emotional fight for freedom. The story inspires hope, resilience, and unity, encouraging viewers to work harder, love others, and stay true to their values.

The film also shines in its cultural representation. Stunning costumes, vibrant colors, and traditional fashion transport viewers into the rich culture of the Egba people.  Everyday items like palm oil, kolanut, yam, and corn are symbolically tied to their history and spiritual significance, these items, often paired with beautiful prayers, highlight the cultural richness of the Egba , accompanied by heartfelt songs of freedom. The production design further elevate the film to rival global historical epics.

However, while the pacing is solid, a few areas could have been improved. A battle scene between Lisabi and Oloyo’s warriors, for instance, lacked tension. Adding a soldier seeking the king’s recognition could have heightened the drama. Additionally, the film’s exposition could have been deeper. Showing more of the village surroundings, forests, and vast battlefields might have drawn viewers further into the story’s world.

As the movie progresses, it raises an important question: will the Egba people’s hard-won peace and freedom be sustained, or will it fall victim to human flaws and errors?

The film concludes with a lasting tribute: “The unity of the Egba people and their freedom will always be attributed to Lisabi Agbongbo Akala.”

I would rate the movie 7/10 .

If you’re on the fence about watching it, don’t be. Lisabi: A Legend is Born speaks to love, unity, and the importance of remembering your roots. It’s an inspiring journey worth taking, available now on Netflix.
